Hank Jones and Milt Jackson - Umbria Jazz Festival
Hank on the June 2005 cover of Downbeat Magazine

Hank Jones, pianist

Throughout his career, Hank Jones has played and recorded with the virtual who’s who of Jazz history. With over five hundred albums and CDs recorded and countless concerts, there aren’t too many significant names in Jazz that Hank Jones has not played or recorded with. As Hank reflects on his past, one regret is that he did not record more with his late brothers Thad and Elvin, however, he was able to make his last recording ‘The Great Trio Collaboration’ on Village Records with Elvin before he passed away.

Recently featured on the cover of the June 2005 issue of Downbeat magazine, the world is recognizing that Hank Jones is one of the last surviving Jazz greats that helped to forge this great musical genre called Jazz. Always the consummate professional, Hank Jones has lived his life and career honoring the musical genre of Jazz and he is now recognized around the world as one of the true great Jazz Masters.

Lenore Raphael, piano Lenore Raphael, piano

Jazz writer John Gilbert has called Lenore "Simply one of the best pianists in our art form...she always swings." Critics have used words like "swinging", "emotional" and "artistically subtle" when describing Lenore's playing.
Swinging has always been of major importance to Lenore since she listened to her idols Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson. So is "telling the story". She strives to be in touch with the intent of the tune when she plays.

Art Tatum, piano Art Tatum, pianists, piano

I believe that Art Tatum somehow changed everything I understood about piano playing. Here was a man who played incredibly complex lines with insane left hand stride accompaniments, flawlessly -- and he was blind! When I listened to his recordings, I thought... "This can't even be a human... It's too perfect.".

Chick Corea's four-decade career is the stuff of jazz lore, an amalgamation of influential, limit-stretching musical experiences which have filled many a page in 20th century music history encyclopedias. Lennie Tristano, piano 1919-1978 Lennie Tristano, pianists, piano 1919-1978

The history of jazz is written as a recounting of the lives of its most famous (and presumably, most influential) artists. Reality is not so simple, however. Certainly the very most important of the music's innovators are those whose names are known by all -- Armstrong, Parker, Young, Coltrane--
