Tineke Postma (1978) started playing the saxophone,
flute and piano at the age 9. She was immediately attracted by jazz and
pop music. After finishing her Bachelor's Degree in jazz music, she graduated
Cum Laude in June 2003 from the masters program at the Conservatory of
Amsterdam. During her masters study Tineke received two scholarships for
studying at the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Dick
Oatts, David Liebman and Chris Potter.
NEW CD
RELEASE: "FOR THE RHYTHM!" and DVD RELEASE "LIVE IN AMSTERDAM"
Tineke Postma's second album "For the Rhythm" featuring Herbie
Hancocks drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Darryl Hall, Jeroen Vierdag (bass),
Rob van Bavel (piano) and Edoardo Righini (guitar) was presented on April
14 in the sold out BIMHUIS in Amsterdam. This album reached a #20 in the
US JAZZWEEK ALBUMA CHART. On august 29 National Dutch Television in cooperation
with Munich Records and Radio Netherlands recorded Tineke's Concert in
this same BIMHUIS in Amsterdam. A selection of the concert has been broadcasted
twice on National Dutch TV and meanwhile the whole concert is released
on a DTS5:1 DVD "Live in Amsterdam" and is currently available
in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France and will soon be released
in UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, USA and Japan. In these countries
both Tinekes CD's are available as well!
DEBUT CD "FIRST AVENUE"
Tineke's debut album, FIRST AVENUE, was released at the North Sea Jazz
during a radio broadcast of "Radio West". Her album contains
mainly original compositions from Tineke. The Tineke Postma Quartet played
at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and in several
clubs throughout Europe. Her CD received 4 and 5 star reviews. Tineke's
first album has been in the Jazzweek album chart in the USA for several
months and the highest ranking was #19. Her music was played by over 200
American radio stations. Tineke recorded several of her compositions with
the 56 piece Metropole Orchestra. This program was broadcasted on Dutch
national radio.
AWARDS
In 2002 Tineke was nominated for the Anderson Award, Pim Jacobs Prize
and she was selected for the Young Talent Award. As the first Dutch female
musician she won the prestigious Sisters in Jazz Competition (IAJE,USA)
and toured, together with the SIJ Band, throughout the USA (Mary Lou Williams
Festival, IAJE conference) and several European festivals (North
Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz a Vienne, Umbria Jazz Festival). August 2003
Tineke was selected for the first Singer Laren Jazz Award. May 2004, Tineke
received the Heijmans Award. In January 2006 Tineke won the Revelation
of the year / Midem Jazz Special Prize in Cannes France during Midem 2006.
THE STYLE
Tineke's playing has been influenced by many great musicians. Her big
examples are: Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and groups
like Dave Holland's, Weather Report and the Miles Davis Quintet. New York
has been for her a big inspiration, Tineke has been studying modern jazz
styles You can hear the fact that she has been in close touch with different
styles in music if you listen to Tineke. She likes to mix soul and fusion
with traditional jazz and because of this she creates a fresh sound.
